What is FSC Friday (and why do we need it)?

September 25, 2020

FSC Friday is the annual event held by The Forest Stewardship Council striving to raise awareness about responsible forest management.

Unsurprisingly, here at Buildpass we make it a priority to keep a close eye on movements in the sustainability industry. Whether that’s in ‘green’ construction or environmental progress in general, we love to embed ourselves within events, campaigns and updates. Which is why we are so excited to celebrate FSC Friday today.

FSC Friday is run by The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international, non-governmental organisation on a mission to promote the responsible management of our world’s forests. They endeavour to:

What is FSC Friday? FSC Friday is an annual event held on Friday 25 September 2020. It is designed to raise awareness of responsible forestry – be that through forest management practices, or sourcing and buying FSC certified materials and products.

The event is an opportunity to not only educate the masses about the importance of sustainable forest management, but also for the FSC’s global community to share their support for the organisation’s integral work.

Why do we need FSC Friday?

Deforestation and irresponsible forestry is a major problem facing our world today – an issue that will impact every single one of us.

By 2030, we may only have 10% of Rainforests left… they could all disappear in a hundred years. Up to 28,000 species are expected to go extinct in the next quarter due to deforestation, and it is also the cause of 15% of carbon emissions.

FSC Friday aims to increase awareness of FSC overall, and the vital role FSC products and practices play in tackling the battle against deforestation. FSC wants more people to choose FSC certified products more of the time; whether personal or on a larger scale, such as through the workplace. This could be anything from toilet paper to the wood you use in construction.

Big or small, the fact is that we all have a role to play.

What is this year’s theme?

‘Forests for All Together’ is the FSC Friday theme of 2020. The theme hopes to celebrate the importance of bringing people together as a community to responsibly care for forests. From environmentalists to major corporations, Indigenous Peoples to communities and governments, conscious consumers to forest workers, we all must collaborate for the greater good of our planet.

After all, we are stronger together.

How can I get involved?

It’s simple, really; just share your commitment to FSC!

If you are already committed to the practices and products of FSC, then shout about it – if not, now is the time to look at your systems and make a change.

If you are an FSC certificate and license holder, you can download the FSC Friday assets for the FSC Marketing and Communications Toolkit – just login and search ‘FSC Friday’. These assets will help you spread the word and expand the reach of this very important campaign.

And if you want to learn more about the history of FSC Friday and the 2020 campaign, the organisation has put together an interesting, in-depth free webinar which you can watch here.

Now… let’s all go and celebrate FSC Friday!
